Choosing the right powered access platform for your work isn’t always straightforward. Let’s break down the key factors to consider when deciding which cherry picker to hire.
1. How long will you be on site?
If your work is all based at a single location over a long period—weeks or months—you may be better off using a self-propelled boom or scissor lift. These are delivered directly to site and are ideal for static, longer-term work. We can supply these via our rehire division, Smart Rentall, if required.
However, if your job involves multiple sites or short durations (e.g. one or two days), then a vehicle-mounted cherry picker is likely the best option. These are road-legal MEWPs under 3.5 tonnes and drivable on a standard UK licence. You can drive between locations without needing costly transport logistics.
2. Can you set the machine up at your location?
If space is limited, setup becomes a key concern. Vehicle-mounted platforms require room to extend their outriggers, but we offer several options to help with restricted access:
- V11T: No outriggers, compact footprint (2.2m wide).
- Z20i: Features one-sided jacking, allows full reach on one side, with a reduced footprint on the other.
- S20J: Features narrow jacking, ideal for tighter urban spaces.
If your site has extreme width restrictions or soft ground, you may need a tracked boom (a.k.a. spider lift) instead. These are lightweight and compact, ideal for delicate or difficult areas. Again, we can supply these through Smart Rentall.
3. How much reach do you need?
This is the most important consideration. In order to recommend the best machine, we need to know two things:
- Height requirement – how high do you need to work?
- Outreach requirement – how far horizontally must the boom extend?
We use Google Earth, Street View, site photos, and if needed, we can provide a full site survey. But note: outreach is measured from the centre of the machine’s turret – so always give yourself an extra metre or two of safety margin. If you’re short, even by a metre, the job might be impossible.
4. Do you need any specific features?
There are several refinements to consider based on your task:
- Fly-jib booms (Z21, Z23): Ideal for roof work or getting up and over obstacles.
- Basket capacity: Machines like the V11T are for one person (120kg), whereas Z20 offers 230kg for two people and tools.
- Van mounts (V11T, V12): Come with enclosed storage – handy if you want to store gear or use just one vehicle for the job.
5. What terrain are you working on?
If your job is across soft ground, a field, or rugged terrain, consider our RT13. This 13m rough terrain machine is designed for hard-to-reach or uneven areas. It’s a self-drive platform with robust tyres and suspension for off-road access.
6. Do you need something even bigger?
For high-level commercial jobs, we also offer operated truck-mounted platforms from 33m to 56m. These come with trained operators and can be booked for day or night work nationwide.

FAQs
How do I know what height cherry picker I need?
Think about the maximum working height you need to reach. Add a safety margin of at least 1–2 metres to avoid falling short. If you’re unsure, our team can help assess the site via photos, Google Maps or site visit.
What’s the difference between a van mount and a flatbed cherry picker?
Van mounts (like the V12) come with enclosed storage space for tools and materials. Flatbeds offer larger platforms and higher working heights but less room for cargo.
Can I hire a cherry picker for just one day?
Yes! We offer self-drive cherry picker hire from just one day. We also offer 24-hour options with early collection or late return for added flexibility.
Can you deliver a machine to my site?
Yes – we offer both self-drive and operated hire. We can deliver a self-drive machine for hires in excess of one week. Or we can supply an operator to meet you onsite, day, night, weekend – whenever suits.
