Smart Platforms offers fast, flexible cherry picker hire from our Hemel Hempstead depot — perfectly positioned for customers in North London and surrounding areas. Whether you’re based in Watford, St Albans, Harrow, or heading into central London, Hemel is your most convenient stop for collecting a self-drive vehicle-mounted MEWP.

All our self-drive platforms are under 3.5 tonnes, meaning you can drive them on a standard car licence. Simply book online or by phone, collect your machine from our depot (just minutes from the M1 and M25), and drive it directly to your work site. Our hire options include 1-day rental, 24-hour options with early/late collection, and discounts for week-long or long-term hires.

Exit M25 at Junction 21 and merge onto M1 and stay on M1 for 4 miles.
At exit 8, keep LEFT onto Ramp following signs for A414/Hemel Hempstead.
At roundabout, take the SECOND exit keeping on the A414.
Road name changes to A414 Breakspear Way.
At roundabout, take the THIRD exit onto A4147 (Mayland Avenue) for 1 mile.
Turn right onto McDonalds Way; next right after Maxsted Road, just after STS ProTyres and before Screwfix Direct on right hand side.
Smart Platforms – 100 yards on the right on bend.

from M1

Hemel Cherry Picker Hire – FAQs

How does self-drive cherry picker hire work?

Simply register with us, book your machine, and collect it from one of our depots. If you’re using our Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), you’ll need your driving licence and National Insurance number. One of our engineers will walk you through a full handover before you hit the road.

Do you offer one-day or overnight hire?

Yes. You can hire for a single day (7:30am–5:30pm), or choose a 24-hour slot via PM collection (5:00pm) or AM return (7:00am) — perfect if you just need it overnight.

How much does it cost to hire a self-drive cherry picker?

Our self-drive cherry picker hire starts from £130 per day using your own insurance. If you’d like to use our CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) cover, this adds £47 per day (£65 for the S27).

What sizes of self-drive cherry pickers do you offer?

We offer a range of machines from 10m to 27m. With different platform styles and boom configurations, we’ll help match you with the right unit for the job.

Can I return in the morning or collect in the evening?

Yes. We offer AM returns (7:00am) and PM collections (5:00pm). This gives you up to 24 hours on-site without paying for an extra day — but we do recommend booking in advance as these slots can get taken.

I’ve been using Smart Platforms for many years and have always had a great experience. The staff are consistently friendly, helpful, and easy to deal with. The machines, both older and newer are well maintained and reliable. Even the older models perform due to regular servicing, so I’ve never had any concerns on site. I’ve hired a range of self-drive machines and occasionally opted for a manned truck when collection wasn’t possible. Everything has always gone smoothly. The pricing is very competitive, and the company is flexible and accommodating. Highly recommended, and I look forward to continuing to work with them.
