Smart Platforms

Smart’s new compact addition

Powered access provider Smart Platform Rental Ltd has recently announced the introduction of its latest truck mounted platform, the Z-10. It has a working height of over 10m (35ft) and an outreach of over 4m (14ft), and is the first platform to be mounted on the new style Transit cab chassis. This makes the Z-10 a compact and yet competent platform for many commercial tasks.

The company developed the machine in response to a large number of its core sector customers stating that their Z-14 14m platform sometimes had too large a working envelope.  ‘We’d often receive feedback from clients who’d tell us that they simply wanted a platform that could go ‘straight up’ with negligible outreach and we decided that this was an opportunity not to be missed’, stated Guy Willett; Commercial Director.

Smart, who pioneered the hire of self drive truck mounted aerial platforms in the UK five years ago, scoured the market to find an appropriate machine. ‘We wanted a sub 3.5 tonne truck mount that could address this niche but were dissatisfied with what was available, so we had five bespoke platforms engineered to a very exacting specification. This included van mount style jacks for fast set up and set downs and with a footprint well within a single car park space along with an articulated boom for any unexpected up and over outreach issues. A substantial tool box capacity and quiet boom operation were also important issues.’

Smart has several key markets in its sights for the Z-10, including the CCTV and external lighting markets where ‘straight up’ pole applications are the norm, but the company consider these are just the immediate applications. ‘We feel that many of our customers will see the benefit where they maybe traditionally relied on scaff towers or ladders, such as low level signage and shop front work or first second floor building maintenance work.’
